The murder of George Floyd and others in 2020 and the racial justice movement across the United States sparked the recognition that Harvard Business School needed to clearly reject racism in all its forms, as it is fundamentally inconsistent with the School’s mission and values, and to act to promote racial equity both on campus and beyond.
HBS is taking significant steps to welcome and promote Black talent, advance research related to race and use case discussions to educate students about racism, engage the business community in change efforts, and—subsequently—address the needs of those underrepresented or marginalized because of gender, race, creed, nationality, sexual orientation, political beliefs, and socioeconomic background. This ongoing work follows the September 2020 release of HBS’s comprehensive Racial Equity Plan (REP). Developed by a diverse cross-section of the School’s community, the REP is woven into every aspect of the HBS experience and includes the School’s pledge to hold itself accountable to measurable progress. “HBS is redoubling its commitment to combat racism to create meaningful and enduring change that will enable every member of our community to be their best self,” notes Dean Srikant Datar.
The School has earmarked $25 million over the next decade to advance racial equity and diversity at HBS and in the world. As always, the HBS Fund will play an important role in supporting the School’s efforts, and now, alumni and friends have the option of directing their HBS Fund gifts specifically to Diversity and Equity. In addition, alumni and friends of the School can visit the Advancing Racial Equity section of the HBS website anytime to learn more about the important work being done at HBS and by alumni to further racial justice.
