Walking the TalkTalk
Describing herself to London’s Daily Mail (February 3, 2011) as “super ambitious and ridiculously hard-working,” Diana (“Dido”) Harding (MBA ’92) also confessed that she “would be competitive over a game of tiddlywinks. And I have always tended to push myself to do something I wasn’t sure I could do — I like to set myself what appear to be impossible challenges.”
She embraced a formidable task in 2010 when, with years of experience at supermarket chains Sainsbury’s and Tesco but none in telecom, she became CEO of TalkTalk, which supplies telephone and broadband services to more than 4 million customers in Britain. Virtually nonexistent five years ago, TalkTalk has since grown exponentially, principally through acquisitions. Harding’s emphasis, the Daily Mail felicitously opined, should be on “tidying up the operation.” A daunting task for some perhaps, but apparently not for Harding, who told the paper, with a smile, “I enjoy being slightly scared.”
