Eye in the Storm
As turmoil swept across the Middle East, assessing it objectively and analytically was of particular interest to Amos Schocken (MBA ’70), the owner and publisher of the authoritative Israeli newspaper Haaretz, sometimes referred to as “the New York Times of Israel.” In addition to leading a publication whose left-wing political views are controversial, Schocken faces all the business-model and financial challenges confronting traditional media everywhere.
Schocken is a free-market, pro-business advocate who is “a singular force in Israeli journalism on issues such as free speech, equal rights for Israeli Arabs, the independence of the Supreme Court, and the exposure of military abuse,” the New Yorker magazine wrote (February 28, 2011). Of his family-owned (since 1935) enterprise, Schocken said, “The ability to publish a newspaper that does not serve any outside agenda, except what its editors believe, is in the best interests of the country.”
