Map Quest
Next time you’re in La Jolla, California, you can use your GPS to locate the brand-new Map & Atlas Museum at 7825 Fay Avenue. Or better yet, unfold a crinkly old paper street map to find it. Mike Stone (MBA ’88) might find that latter method more appropriate. A couple of decades ago, Stone began collecting historic and antique maps and atlases and soon had 500 or so rare items from around the world, some dating back to the 1400s.
A philanthropist and the founder of the financial firm Westwind Investors, Stone decided to open a museum, and in February his collection went public, SignOnSanDiego.com reported (February 8, 2011). And what explains his fascination with maps? “When you look back in history at decisions that shaped the world,” Stone said, “there were people sitting around tables in rooms looking at maps. They used maps to form governments and start wars — to make decisions that still influence our lives today.”
