The things we choose to save, and display, say something about us. Along with the usual photos of loved ones (husband, daughter, horse), my desk in Teele Hall includes a ceramic bluebird, a train ticket from Sri Lanka, and a vintage Budweiser can discovered during a bathroom renovation. Last spring, when the editorial team holed up to brainstorm new departments for HBS magazine, we thought about all the cool things we’d seen in faculty offices over the years. Surely there were more we didn’t even know about. Wouldn’t it be fun to find and share them with readers?
Last summer I spent a little time working my way through the Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and a floor or so of Morgan Hall (home to 164 faculty offices and a fourth-century Roman mosaic of the Greek sea goddess Tethys). With a bit of snooping and door-knocking, it didn’t take long to find some good stuff, as we say in the magazine biz. For our December launch issue, we included the story of Professor of Management Practice Dante Roscini’s (MBA 1988) vintage IBM PC Convertible, a required purchase at the time for all incoming MBAs. On page 10 of this issue, you’ll find a few selections from Professor of Management Practice Joseph Fuller’s (MBA 1981) extensive collection of flying pigs (yes, there’s a good story there). He estimates it at 50 items, but I think that might be a bit low.
We call this department “Assets.” It’s one of quite a few changes to a reimagined magazine that represents the entirety of the HBS community, including students, staff, faculty, and alumni. We hope the changes will start a conversation. What keepsakes do you have in your office and what do they say about you? Any other stories you think we should hear? Send us a note (and pictures of your own “assets”) at magazine@hbs.edu.
