A Fearless Fighter Honored

On September 5, 2024, a plaque was unveiled in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, memorializing a mission led by James Holt Green (MBA 1935) on its 80th anniversary. As recalled in a 2019 Bulletin article, Green and his team of six Office of Strategic Services (OSS) officers arrived in Banská Bystrica in 1944 with a very specific directive: Support the Slovak National Uprising to weaken the Axis forces—and, hopefully, bring a speedy close to WWII.
While the group was eventually forced into the Slovak mountains by advancing German forces—and joined there by a group of British Special Operations Executive forces—Green continued to fight, blocking German troop access to a vital railroad hub by blowing up a nearby tunnel. After several weeks on the run, though, Green was captured and ultimately killed.
“The unity and resolve they demonstrated in the face of unimaginable adversity reminds us that we must continue to stand side by side as nations, allies, and friends to defend the values we cherish,” H. E. Gautam A. Rana, US Ambassador to Slovakia, noted during the unveiling ceremony, part of a national celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. “Let us draw strength from their example."
The Bulletin article on Green's mission was cited by the Banska Bystrica city manager with helping provide context for the ceremony and will be included on a forthcoming city website dedicated to the mission.
