Netflix Enters Its Dan Lin (MBA 1999) Era

The Hollywood Reporter recently published a profile of Dan Lin (MBA 1999), the new head of film at Netflix, which details the challenges and opportunities ahead for him at the streaming giant.
Lin is a longtime producer (notably of The Lego Movie and Sherlock Holmes) and founder of Rideback, the production company he launched in 2007. He spoke to Skydeck in 2017 about how he approached his work. “[I] want movies where you walk away, and you're still talking about those movies, and there's something meaningful about them,” Lin said at the time. “And at the end of the day, when you grow up, you'll remember The Lego Movie and hopefully it will be some kid's favorite movie when they were growing up just like Indiana Jones is my favorite movie or Star Wars was my favorite movie.”
The Hollywood Reporter article notes that Lin will likely advance Netflix’s “fewer, bigger, better” approach to films, and noted his reputation for adhering to budgets. In a statement at the time of his appointment, Lin noted his interest in the new role was due in part to how well the organization’s vision aligned with his “own personal and professional values and what we have been building at Rideback.”
“There is such a strong foundation that’s already been established in the film division at Netflix, one I’m excited to take to the next level as we continue growing this creative community to make Netflix the #1 home for filmmakers,” Lin wrote.
