Leadership Transition for External Relations
MESSAGE FROM ANGELA CRISPI AND DEAN SRIKANT DATAR

Re: Leadership Transition – Janet Cahill, External Relations
We write to let you know that Janet Cahill (AMP 189) has decided to step down from her position as Executive Director of External Relations as of January 1, 2024. As you might imagine, this is bittersweet news. We are excited for her as she contemplates the next chapter in her life and career, but will miss her many, many contributions to the School and our community as well as her wisdom, experience, and dedication.
Janet joined Harvard Business School in 2006, working as Associate Director of Alumni Clubs and Associations, Managing Director of Alumni Marketing and Communications, and Managing Director, Campaign and External Relations before taking on leadership of External Relations in 2015. In each of these roles, she developed a deep understanding of the School and strong relationships with our alumni and across the HBS community. As Executive Director, she oversaw the successful completion of the Campaign for Harvard Business School, ensuring that we not only met but surpassed our ambitious $1 billion goal. In the years since, her work with the ER team to strengthen our fundraising enterprise and grow annual giving through the HBS Fund has built a strong foundation to support the School’s core activities and strategic priorities. She early on saw the promise of lifelong learning and developed a vision for HBS for Life that sparked innovation in our alumni engagement efforts and communications offerings. In all aspects of Harvard Business School’s relationship with alumni—programming, volunteer engagement, reunions, alumni clubs, communications, fundraising, and stewardship—Janet and her team have been integral to realizing our mission. We thank her for leaving ER in a position of such remarkable strength.
Until the end of the academic year, Janet has agreed to serve as a Senior Advisor, and will focus on several development activities as she transitions her management responsibilities. We will return before the Winter Recess to outline a succession plan.
Please join us in thanking Janet for the many ways she has so capably headed ER, contributed to the School, and embraced our alumni. We have all been enriched by her leadership and colleagueship.
MESSAGE FROM JANET CAHILL
Dear Fellow Alumni,
As you would expect, I have given this decision much thought and reflection. That said, as I shared with the School leadership earlier this year, from both a professional and personal perspective, I am confident that it is the right time for me and for External Relations (ER). When I joined ER, I would never have imagined spending the next 17 years working with and supporting the most extraordinary alumni community in the world. In big ways and small, in all aspects of your lives, in all corners of the globe, you live out the School’s mission. Supporting, strengthening, and expanding your lifelong relationship with the School and each other is our North Star, and I have been privileged and honored to have worked alongside many of you in my roles over the years. As I close this chapter, I have nothing but tremendous gratitude for you – gratitude for the many ways you make a difference in the world, the many ways you support HBS, and the many ways you inspire the ER team each and every day.
We have accomplished much together over the years, and you have made my tenure in ER a joy, honor, and passion. Your belief in the power of management education and your dedication to HBS have been a constant source of inspiration, and I will always have every confidence in the enduring strength of this alumni community and the boundless potential of HBS.
With deep gratitude, respect, admiration, and affection,
Janet
