Retired senior lecturer Steven Rogers (MBA 1985) bought a church building near his home in Evanston, Illinois, to “improve the quality of life in the immediate neighborhood, provide opportunity to young Black people and uplift the poor Black community,” reports the Evanston RoundTable.
After rehab and upgrades, the venue has begun hosting concerts, including a recent sold-out show by the Fisk University choir. Rogers’ purchase of the property was influenced by its history: In 1929, white property developers forced seven Black families to give up the land where the church now sits. The Daily Northwestern reports that Rogers plans to create a memorial garden to commemorate those families. “I know the history of Blacks in America. But when something comes close to you like that, it becomes personalized,” Rogers told the paper. “It made it real.”
In August 2021, Rogers discussed his book, A Letter to My White Friends and Colleagues: What You Can Do Right Now to Help the Black Community in an episode of Skydeck, the HBS alumni podcast.
