Elevator Pitch: Feedback
Chief Growth Officer, Bright Feeds
Concept: Bright Feeds uses patent-pending drying technology and an AI-driven processing technique to convert all varieties of food waste into a high-quality and consistent animal-feed replacement for the soy and corn typically sold to feed mills.
The Why: Of the 110 million tons of food waste generated annually in the United States, 75 percent ends up in landfills or incinerators, making it a leading source of CO2 emissions (10 percent of greenhouse gasses can be attributed to methane produced by rotting food). The waste-free, closed-loop production process developed by Bright Feeds is energy-efficient and carbon-negative.
Heard:
“Working in the sustainability space for a for-profit business that is mission-driven has been really rewarding. This is not a hard sell. People get it immediately.”
Status Update: Bright Feeds’ first manufacturing facility, located in Connecticut, began production in October 2022 with the capacity to process 450 tons of food waste per day; the company expects to open a fundraising round in early 2024 for further expansion of its hub-and-spoke operations model. Earlier this year, Bright Feeds was selected to join the Harvard Climate Entrepreneur’s Circle, an incubation program for high-potential ventures working to address climate change.
