Innovation has a New Home: The Harvard Innovation Lab
Topics: Innovation-Innovation StrategyEducation-Campus LifeBusiness Ventures-Business OfficesSet to open this fall in a newly renovated building on Western Avenue in Allston, the Harvard Innovation Lab is stirring up excitement at HBS and across the University.
The “i-lab” will foster collaborative, entrepreneurial activities and provide a forum, both physically and virtually, for interactions among students, faculty, alumni, and the local community. For the first time, students from different academic disciplines across the University will have access to shared space to work on new ventures, guidance from HBS’s Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, and a program of activities to deepen their understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Teams enrolled in Commercializing Science, a course that draws students from across Harvard to pursue multidisciplinary projects directed at moving research from the lab to the marketplace, and those participating in the annual HBS Business Plan Contest will be among the many to benefit from the i-lab. Inaugural i-lab director Gordon Jones thinks there’s no shortage of opportunity, noting: “I am excited by the level of desire I am witnessing within Harvard for the i-lab to become a place where learning and hands-on experience come together. Everyone sees the potential.”
With the vision and leadership of Dean Nohria, faculty chair Joe Lassiter, and director Gordon Jones, it’s little wonder that the i-lab is resonating with Harvard alumni, some of whom have stepped up with gifts in support of the effort. HBS is seeking additional funding to ensure that the i-lab will launch as planned and to support future activities.
