Our “On the Move” series highlights HBS alumni who are taking on new roles and responsibilities. In this inaugural post, we speak with Anand Kini (MBA 1997), who in March was named executive vice president of corporate strategy at Comcast in addition to his role as CFO at NBCUniversal, where he has been since 2011.

How did you prepare for day one?
I believe that a priority when taking on any new role is learning how your team best works together and can add the most value. This is especially true for strategy groups, since their scope is typically broad, making prioritization particularly important. I’ve been listening to different stakeholders across the company on how our team can be the most impactful—for example, which projects warrant the most immediate attention. That momentum allows you to hit the ground running on day one.

What’s exciting to you about this new role?
I have been at the company for 16 years and in my new role, I’ll have the opportunity to work with every part of Comcast’s global portfolio to drive growth and innovation. We have world-class teams across our company and I couldn’t be more excited to work with them on existing and new initiatives.

What’s your morning, pre-work routine?
I have to start the day off with some kind of exercise—whether that’s going for a run or getting on the Peloton. It helps set my body and mind in the right place. I then use the train ride into work as an opportunity to catch up on the news and what I need to know for my day. I’m a creature of habit, and this routine helps set up the rest of the day.
