The Road to the C-Suite, with Citi CFO Mark Mason

In January, Mark Mason (MBA 1995) was named to the 2022 Forbes CEO Next list, an annual list of 50 executives who are likely to lead some of America’s largest companies. Mason sat down for an interview with Diane Brady for an installment of “The C-Suite Interview,” where he talked about his route to the CFO office at Citi.
In the interview, Mason talks about growing up in Queens, in a family full of business-minded people, but wanting to be a doctor when he was a child. Even from a young age there were signs that he had a knack for business: Mason carried a Samsonite briefcase to elementary school, he says, and sold bubblegum and baseball cards to his classmates over lunch.
Later, Mason enrolled in Howard University’s premed program but switched to the business program by the second semester. There, earning his degree in finance and studying with the case method, Mason found the experience transformational. “It was an opportunity to learn with and from Black people from all over the world,” he says. He went on to play key roles at Marakon Associates and Lucent, before joining Citi in 2001.
