HBS professors Michael Porter and Rosabeth Moss Kanter have won the 2011 McKinsey Awards for best articles published in the Harvard Business Review last year. Established in 1959, the award has been given annually by HBR and McKinsey & Company.

Porter and coauthor Mark Kramer, cofounder and managing director of FSG, a nonprofit consulting firm, were awarded first place for their January–February 2011 article “Creating Shared Value.” The article lays out the concept of shared value, which focuses on the connections between societal and economic progress. The authors argue that shared value has the power to unleash the next wave of global growth.

Kanter received second-place honors for “How Great Companies Think Differently,” which appeared in the November 2011 issue. In her article, Kanter explains that traditional theories of the firm are dominated by the notion of opposition between capital and labor, disconnecting business from society and posing conflicts between them. She advocates a new approach to leadership and corporate behavior in which companies exhibit, among other things, a common purpose, a long-term view, emotional engagement, and community building.

The McKinsey Awards are judged by an independent panel of business and academic leaders and recognize practical and groundbreaking management thinking.
