When she joined United Way Miami in August as the organization’s CEO, Symeria Hudson (MBA 1997) made a Friday her first day on the job so she could use the weekend to reflect on all she’d seen and heard. Going forward, she’s stuck to that thoughtful, reflective approach, taking the time in her first few months to meet with the organizations many employees, volunteers, donors, and beneficiaries in order to craft what she refers to as her “100-day plan.”

“I don’t want to make changes before I talk to all the stakeholders,” Hudson told the Miami Herald. “I’ve got to listen and learn before I make major changes.”

Hudson’s background includes 25 years of experience in the corporate world, most recently in the field of medical technology. After a year-long break following a successful IPO, she made the switch to the nonprofit sector in 2018, becoming CEO of Chapman Partnership, an organization providing shelter to Miami-Dade’s unhoused population. “One person on the streets is one too many,” Hudson said in an HBS alumni profile earlier this year.

United Way Miami supports more than 60 organizations and 107 programs. While Hudson said her “heart and head” were with Chapman—her Uncle Billy also struggled with homelessness—she found it difficult to turn down the opportunity to lead United Way Miami: “I thought this could be a way to have a greater impact. The homeless community is a subset of a greater challenge for Miami-Dade County,” Hudson said.
