Giving Through HBS
In talking to alumni about supporting the School, one of the things I like to remind people is that they don’t give to HBS, they give through HBS. The work of the School—and of our graduates—has the power to change the world and to change lives, and that work relies heavily on alumni giving.
Most alumni donors take a portfolio approach to giving—they give to local organizations that serve their communities; they give to global organizations whose efforts they want to advance; and they give to HBS because they believe in our mission and understand that their support will be leveraged to have a broad and deep impact.
Many of the big ideas that have changed the global understanding of business originated at HBS. Whether it is the late Bob Anthony’s work on corporate control, Baker Foundation Professor Bob Kaplan’s development of the balanced scorecard, or Bishop William Lawrence University Professor Michael Porter’s insights on competitiveness, the faculty’s ongoing research continues to shape management education and practice. Our success in developing and disseminating pathbreaking ideas is supported by alumni, whose gifts allow faculty to focus on research and teaching rather than on securing grants from outside sources.
Similarly, alumni donors have a direct impact on future leaders by supporting student fellowships and our efforts to deliver a transformational educational experience. Every day at HBS, students challenge, inspire, and learn from each other, and they also influence those of us who have the privilege of teaching them. Upon graduation, our alumni use their HBS education to launch companies, start new industries, create jobs, and set the example of what leadership looks like in this global century.
We take great pride in the contributions that our alumni and faculty make to society, and we treasure the vote of confidence you give us by supporting the work of the School.
