The American Dream
An IBM engineer, Stacey Lawson (MBA 1996) noticed that a number of her colleagues, though surrounded by technology, still used pencil and paper for designing standard industrial parts. Later, at HBS, as part of a field study, she worked out an idea for a digital library for users of computer-aided design (CAD). That became InPart Design, a company she sold to Parametric Technology for a reported $60 million two years after founding it. After success as a corporate executive at both Parametric and Seibel Systems, Lawson cofounded the Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology at UC Berkeley. Lately her life has taken her down a spiritual path—she is an adherent of meditation—and made a political turn: she’s a candidate for Congress from California’s 2nd District.
Lawson, who once lived in a mobile home in rural Washington State while her enterprising father, a truck driver, was building his own company, is running as a pro-business Democrat and advocate for the middle class. “I come from those roots,” she told the Santa Rosa (CA) Press Democrat (February 12, 2012). “I had the benefit of living the American dream. I see that slipping away.”
