Images of Occupy
A Los Angeles–based fashion and corporate photographer and filmmaker, August Bradley (MBA 1997) also specializes in evocative conceptual photo tableaus that owe much to childhood hours spent in his mother’s portrait photography studio. Last November, while in New York on a corporate assignment, Bradley dropped by Zuccotti Park with his Hasselblad and some lighting equipment. He came away with a striking collection of photos of arbitrarily selected protesters that he called “99 Faces of Occupy Wall St.” (www.augustbradley.com). The images quickly went viral on the Internet.
According to the New York Times (November 16, 2011), Bradley wanted “to look into the protesters’ eyes, seeking the personalities behind the leaderless movement.” For Bradley, it was more like photojournalism than his usual work: “I think that’s really exciting to me,” he said. “It’s something I haven’t done much of, though I did bring a very studio sensibility.”
