In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) month, MTV’s Entertainment brands are streaming a global television special, “See Us Unite for Change,” on May 21. Hosted by comedian Ken Jeong, the production features stars, athletes, and influencers who are coming together behind a message of solidarity and support for the AAPI community.

The event is part of a larger campaign called See Us Unite, organized by the Asian American Foundation (TAAF) in partnership with the Ford and MacArthur Foundations, according to a recent article on Emmys.com. Sheila Lirio Marcelo (MBA 1998), the founder of Care.com and TAAF board member, is an executive producer of the event. “Not only are business leaders, activists and talent coming together to support this cause, but we have networks and media uniting and working together to support,” she says.

The event is the first of its kind and will be presented across MTV’s Entertainment brands including MTV, Comedy Central and VH1, as well as BET, Nickelodeon, and Facebook Watch; Marcelo says she hopes to see it become an annual event.

“The special is inviting viewers to learn more about the AAPI journey. There will be pieces offering solutions of what you can do to be an ally. In addition, you will laugh, you will dance for joy, you will cry. You will feel the emotion that is heartfelt from the performers about the love for our community and our country. What we really want to do is welcome everyone. Gandhi once said you can change a culture and build a country when you are in the hearts and minds of the people. We want to not just enter the homes of viewers, but also their hearts and minds to drive change,” Marcelo says.
