For MBA 2007 Section E Cochairs Kara Medoff Barnett and Amy Belkin, their 5th Reunion was an opportunity to temper grief with renewed connections. In the fall of 2011, sectionmate Haydar Shaydullin was struck and killed by a car in Moscow where he worked for Morgan Stanley. “We felt deeply sad and completely helpless,” Barnett says. “We wanted to do something positive and meaningful.”
Section E rallied, and with 61 percent participation, a fund designated for HBS’s work in global business leadership was established in memory of their sectionmate. The Haydar Shaydullin (MBA 2007 Section E) Memorial Global Initiative Fund supports HBS global activities such as case writing, curriculum development, and fellowships for students coming to the School from outside the United States. “We started from a place of tragedy,” reflects Barnett, who spearheaded the effort with Belkin. “The fund was a way for us to come together as a section to celebrate Haydar’s efforts to build international relationships and global understanding.”
“Instead of each of us making individual gifts,” Belkin says, “it felt more meaningful to raise money as a group behind one effort in his name.” Barnett notes a gentle irony in their efforts.
“Haydar was such an understated individual,” she adds. “He would blush if he knew this was happening.”
