It’s a Small World
A few years ago, Neil Pasricha’s (MBA 2007) personal life took a turn for the worse. To cheer himself up during a dark time, the Toronto resident started writing about what he called life’s “awesome” pleasures—which he defines as “free, simple, and universal”—and decided to create a website, 1000 Awesome Things, and post a new entry every weekday. He vowed that he would stop at 1,000, and so he did, authoring his final entry on April 19. “The end feels bittersweet,” Pasricha told the Toronto Star (March 26, 2012). “The past four years have changed my life.” Indeed, over the years, Pasricha’s blog won three Webby Awards; he wrote a bestseller, The Book of Awesome, based on his posts; and he made hundreds of speaking and media appearances, including on CNN, the BBC, and NBC’s Today.
Pasricha’s positive paeans to things such as the joys of popping the bubbles in packing wrap, the cool side of the pillow, the aroma outside bakeries, and high-fiving babies earned him 100,000 daily readers who welcomed his optimism and to whose letters and emails (up to 100 a day) he unfailingly responded. But now, with the past few years having been so all-consuming, Pasricha is happy to slow down a bit, focus on his day job—he’s an executive at Walmart Canada—and devote more time to the awesome things in life.
