The HBS Social Enterprise community welcomed first-year students with a welcome video which features insights and advice from students, administrative leaders, and second-year students. “The Kick-off,” the accompanying article notes, “was an opportunity for incoming students to meet fellow classmates and learn about social enterprise related opportunities and resources.”

Doug Scatterday, senior director of Facilities, and Rich Stewart, director of Facilities, discuss the changes the School has made to its physical systems to address COVID-19 safety concerns. “In many cases, we're not just meeting the new requirements—if the equipment allows us to do so, we're striving to exceed them,” says Stewart.

In a virtual welcome to the MBA Class of 2022, Dean Nitin Nohria, along with Professors Jan Rivkin and Matt Weinzierl encouraged students to reflect on the leaders they want to become and to dream bigger together. “Reach out and get to know people who are different from you,” Nohria implores students. We’re a wonderfully diverse community, and we get the most out of this diversity if we respect each other. You and your interactions with each other are at the heart of this education.”
Among the changes that Shad General Manager Sue LaRose has seen during re-opening is the appointment system for the facility and the tennis courts. “Members make a 45-minute reservation, and after the 45 minutes we announce that it’s time to exit the facility and we disinfect and clean the area for the next person who comes in at the top of the hour,” says LaRose. She details more of the changes that Shad has instituted to keep the community safe in this Q&A.

In reaction to the pandemic and the resulting guidelines, HBS dining services has redesigned its processes and procedures, introducing everything from directional and spacing decals on the floors to food delivery. “It’s an important service for the school, and our hope is that community members take it as seriously as these associates do with regards to their teammates' health and safety and its impact on the community,” says Andrew Falzone, director of campus and food services.

This chronicle of the HBS’s Re-entry Pilot Day by Marketing and Communications writer Shona Simkin offers an inside look at how the School has instituted safety measures and remote learning capabilities in response to the pandemic. In addition to changes in dining services and traffic flow, Simkin also details the in-classroom updates. “A new camera in the back of the room allows for more instinctive and natural eye contact from the professor,” she notes. “Two screens on one side of the camera display all Zoom participants in gallery view, so that the professor can see, and call upon, the entire group.”
