Rahul Bajaj (MBA 1964), former chairman of the Bajaj group, died on February 12 at the age of 83.

Bajaj became CEO of Bajaj Auto, part of his family’s conglomerate, in 1968 at the age of 30. "Given my family background, I knew I wanted to be a businessman by the time I was about 12," Bajaj told the HBS Alumni Bulletin in 2005, when he was named a recipient of an HBS Alumni Achievement Award, the School’s highest honor.

A remembrance in Forbes notes that, under his watch, “the [Bajaj] group grew into a conglomerate of 40 companies in sectors, such as two-wheelers, financial services, and electrical appliances.” He was awarded the nation's third-highest civilian honor, the Padma Bhushan, in 2001, for his contributions to Indian industry.

“He was one of the pioneer nation builders in modern India and empowered millions of people by providing them with convenient mobility solutions,” Pawan Munjal, chairman and CEO of Hero MotoCorp, a Bajaj competitor, told Forbes. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that Bajaj “will be remembered for his noteworthy contributions to the world of commerce and industry.” Bajaj was honored with a state funeral on Sunday, February 13.
