Stopgap Schooling
As Salman Khan (MBA 2003) tracked the spread of the COVID-19 virus and news that schools were shuttering, he knew that the nonprofit Khan Academy was uniquely positioned to help the many families whose children would suddenly be missing school. Forbes reports that Khan, who founded the online learning site in 2005, met with his team right away to formulate a response.
“After intensive discussions with colleagues, on Friday at 5:30 p.m. PDT, he added a link to the Khan Academy site with suggested daily timelines for four age groups, from Pre-K to grade two to grades 10 to 12. By Monday, traffic to his site had spiked 50%. ‘There are 1 billion children around the world who are suddenly out of school,’ he says. ‘We’re a stopgap.’”
Based in Mountain View, California, Khan Academy had 18 million students using the site every month before the pandemic, with 10,000 classes in 42 languages offered for free. In response to the anticipated surge, Bank of America has pledged $1 million to keep the site up and running. Khan is also running webinars for parents and teachers with guidance about how to incorporate the site’s lessons in home schooling. Their daily homeschool schedules are structured around a combination of online courses, offline reading, writing, and exercise.
