For the Greater Good
John A. Paulson (MBA 1980) is president of the investment firm Paulson & Co. and a 2018 recipient of the HBS Alumni Achievement Award. In this video he offers his views on the nature and role of philanthropy as a means to have a positive impact on society.
“I want to be realistic about the difference I can make in the world. My goal is not to make the most difference or put it on a competitive level or do the most what I can. But I try and be thoughtful and do something at whatever level that could have a positive influence on the world. Supporting the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science—I think that will have a huge difference in the world.
“I also supported Central Park in New York. That is the heart and soul of New York City. It's an 873-acre park right in the middle of Manhattan. And it's almost impossible to think what New York City would be without Central Park.
“Most people don't know, but Central Park, while it's owned by the city, is completely managed by the philanthropic organization called the Central Park Conservancy. And it's almost entirely dependent on private donations.
“I think America has a long history of people who are successful who have ambitions for their wealth, which is doing well for greater society.”
