Moving On
Christopher B. Howard (MBA 2003) is president of Robert Morris University and a 2018 recipient of the HBS Alumni Achievement Award. In this video he explains his philosophy of achieving success.
“I come from a great American story. I'm a great, great grandson of a slave, Amos Howard, who lived to be over 100 years old. I always like to say that my narrative is the American narrative, again, from the great, great grandson of slaves to the president of not one but two universities.
“I went to Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship. And I did a master's degree and a doctorate and worked in several political military positions in NATO, the Pentagon, and the State Department. People ask me, ‘Hey, Chris you're pretty successful. Why are you successful?’
“I go, ‘Because I've failed miserably. Because I've had some really, really, really, really bad days. And through the grace of God, and friendship, and sense of humor, and perspective, I've been able to make my way through that. And then you build those calluses and strength, and you move on.’”
