An established movie producer with numerous hits under his belt, Dan Lin (MBA 1999) understands the long, hard road from idea to script to silver screen. To smooth that journey, Lin founded Rideback Ranch two years ago in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Filipinotown. Now 100 people (15 of them Lin’s employees) work in a communal space with the look and feel of a classic Old West set, right down to the old-fashioned saloon.

“If you put a bunch of creative people from different backgrounds into one space, something magical will happen,” Lin told the New York Times. “Studio lots used to be just that. You could walk around and everyone would be there. But studio lots aren’t as much fun anymore. They can feel corporate.” In addition to workspace, Rideback Ranch offers three script-development programs and other offerings to support the work of writing and producing.

“The best feedback comes from fellow creators,” said Lin, who spoke to the Skydeck podcast in March 2017 before the release of Lego Batman. (The Two Popes, with plenty of advance Oscar buzz, streams December 20 on Netflix). “We want to bring people and ideas together to elevate the potential of both.”
