Alumnus Named McDonald’s CEO
Chris Kempczinski (MBA 1997) has been named the new CEO of McDonald’s. Previously serving as McDonald's USA President, Kempczinski was instrumental in the recent turnaround of the iconic burger chain, a process which was detailed at length in a 2017 HBS Alumni Bulletin feature. That strategy included a rekindling customer interest by refocusing on convenience. “There was a latent love for the brand,” Kempczinski told the Bulletin. “We had just been underdelivering on what their expectations were.”
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kempczinksi said that franchise operators were having a record year for cash flow. The Journal also noted that Kempczinksi had planned a global town hall meeting with employees. “I’ll share a bit more about my background and perspective,” he wrote in an internal memo, “but most importantly, I’d like to hear from colleagues around the world.”
