James Dinan & Elizabeth Miller, both MBA 1985
For Jamie Dinan and Elizabeth Miller, endowing the James Dinan and Elizabeth Miller Professorship of Business Management as a 25th Reunion gift was one more significant step along a mutual journey. Dinan, the founder, chairman, and managing partner of York Capital Management, says, “HBS is our moveable feast. It’s become one of the cornerstones of our life.”
In fact, their joint life began at HBS when, as sectionmates, they met on the first day of their RC year and had their first date at the annual HBS Halloween party. “He was Dracula,” Miller explains, “and I was a motorcycle mama.” A former investment banker, a current full-time mother, and a member of numerous nonprofit boards, Miller sees their gift as a natural extension of the most important lessons they learned at HBS. “We both have strong feelings about where to show our support: leadership research and education. This is not a new direction for HBS, but part of a formalization of what HBS is doing to build leaders who make a difference.”
“Both of us,” Dinan says, “are big on giving back to the world—and we believe in doing it while we’re young. It’s great to see gifts come to fruition in our lifetimes.”
