Environmental Impact
Susan Rasinski McCaw (MBA 1988) and Craig McCaw
As Susan Rasinski McCaw (MBA 1988) has discovered, HBS is a place not only
where students and faculty members can pursue their passions, but
also where alumni can leverage their philanthropic goals while
supporting the School. McCaw, president of COM Investments and
a former US Ambassador to Austria, focuses her philanthropy on
three areas: environmental conservation, education, and international
economic development. She and her husband, Craig, the
telecommunications pioneer who cofounded McCaw Cellular, have
signed the Giving Pledge, and they are making a lasting difference
in the areas important to them through their support for HBS.
“We care deeply about these subjects and wanted to contribute to
efforts that will have a broad impact on the world,” says McCaw.
“Given HBS’s expertise in business and the environment, we hope
to extend the School’s intellectual contributions as they relate to
climate change, sustainability, agribusiness, and good governance.”
McCaw has funded an endowment to support the School’s
Business and Environment Initiative that will advance scholarship
and course and curriculum development, provide fellowships, and
influence practice by convening thought leaders. A self-described
pro-environment, pro-science Republican, she believes that
business has a critical role to play in environmental conservation:
“It’s important that managers take into account societal costs and
understand that the decisions they make may have implications
beyond P&Ls and balance sheets.”
In addition, the McCaws have furthered their interest in education
and international economic development by supporting HBS’s
outreach in Africa. They have contributed to a pilot program
enabling students at the African Leadership University in Mauritius
to participate in the School’s online business fundamentals course
HBX CORe (Credential of Readiness). They are also helping to fund
a Global Opportunity Fellowship that provides support for recent
HBS graduates who decide to work in Africa. “I’m really grateful for
the education I received at the School and the impact it has had on
my life,” says McCaw. “I’m delighted HBS is taking a more active
role in Africa and pleased that we can support that effort.”
