HBS Alumni Association Board of Directors: President's Report
The HBS Alumni Association Board of Directors has had a busy year, meeting both on campus and in informal settings around the world. In January, we returned to HBS for our Winter Meeting. The sessions included important reports from the School's administration and faculty on the exciting changes happening on campus, in particular the arrival of the January cohort and the extraordinary advances in the uses of technology in the School's programs.
Most of the January meeting involved working in Alumni Association committees that address specific areas of concern to alumni. Each of these six committees, whose focus and activities are summarized at right, is working on a particular initiative. Their efforts will no doubt affect each of you in some way.
Alumni Career Services
Charles F. Milner, Jr. (MBA '65), chair
This committee is identifying the growing needs of alumni who are changing jobs or embarking on new careers. Working with local club career advisors, the Office of Alumni Career Services, and the MBA Career Development Office, this group is looking at a variety of services that might add valuable resources to a graduate's job search. Included among this committee's goals is how to maximize the benefits of the alumni network itself.
Network/Database
Stuart C. Ferrell (42nd PMD), chair
One of the most significant resources available to alumni is the HBS network of alumni worldwide. This committee is working to identify the various uses alumni have for the network and ways of making it more accessible to alumni as their needs change throughout their lives. This committee is also working with the Non-U.S.-Based Alumni Connectedness Committee to better understand the needs and expectations of this important constituency.
Non-U.S.-Based Alumni Connectedness
Heiner Thorborg (12th ISMP), chair
This group is in the process of analyzing the results of a survey sent to all international alumni in an effort to understand their connectedness to the School as well as their needs and expectations. Preliminary feedback from the survey indicates that this is a unique group whose points of contact with each other and HBS are different from those of domestic alumni. Understanding these needs will help us better serve this constituency.
Continuing Education Committee
Cyril Taylor (MBA '61), chair
This committee is preparing a white paper for the School with specific recommendations for developing a strategy for alumni lifelong learning. The group is building on work begun three years ago, as well as gathering current input - including data from the executive education program and the HBS Publishing Corporation - in order to propose a fully integrated package of continuing education opportunities.
Young Alumni Connectedness
Carl Ferenbach (MBA '72), chair
Recognizing that our connections with young alumni are tenuous at best, this committee is examining opportunities to develop a valuable dialogue with recent graduates and to connect current MBA students with alumni. Working closely with the School's Alumni Relations staff, the committee has developed a number of activities designed to strengthen young alumni connectedness, including a more comprehensive commencement program and a homecoming weekend in the fall.
Global Alumni Conferences
Arthur W. Buerk, Jr. (MBA '63), chair
This committee evaluates proposals from local clubs to host upcoming Global Alumni Conferences and acts as a resource to the clubs that have been selected as hosts. Currently evaluating proposals for the 1998 conference in North America, committee members have been involved in helping plan the San Francisco and Hong Kong events. The Global Alumni Conferences are important to both graduates and the School, since they provide an opportunity for interaction in a focused setting at a level that is not typically available to the business community at large.
If you were unable to join us in San Francisco in March for the conference on information technology, please plan to meet us in Hong Kong in May 1997, when we will discuss the ramifications of the historic transition to Chinese rule. Stay tuned: the June issue of the Bulletin will have a complete report on the San Francisco conference as well as other Board-sponsored activities.
The HBSAA Board of Directors is committed to representing the alumni constituency and invites your input and feedback. I urge anyone who wants to comment on any of these initiatives or other alumni concerns to contact me or any of the current Board members, a list of whom appears on this page.
