It’s the holiday season and emoji merchandise is flying off the shelves—especially poop emoji (sorry). Chalk it up to the whimsical tastes of the teen and pre-teen market of Five Below’s target audience, where Joel Anderson (MBA 1993) is CEO. A retailer of trendy goods where everything is (you guessed it) five dollars and below, Five Below was launched in 2002 and now has over 500 stores throughout the United States. “Scale, to me, is a three-legged stool: people, systems, and infrastructure,” Anderson told the Philadelphia Inquirer. The former president and CEO of Walmart.com, Anderson talked about store visits, worker pay, and pricing strategy.
