When More Is Better
One of the things I enjoy most about my job is learning about all the amazing undertakings of the School’s 70,000-plus graduates. HBS alumni, it seems, command a fair amount of media attention, much of it for business endeavors: running companies, launching start-ups, inventing things, even writing books. Some of you are incredible adventurers. Others concentrate on humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors.
Apart from my personal reading pleasure, there’s a higher purpose at work. My colleagues here at the Bulletin and I are constantly on the prowl for story ideas for the magazine. For example, a Financial Times article last April about Robert Goodwin (GMP 3, 2007), the CEO of a new nonprofit organization that links experienced businesspeople with humanitarian projects in developing countries, led to this issue’s one-on-one with him (see article).
But for every Robert Goodwin, there are dozens of interesting stories about HBS alumni that we simply don’t have room for in a quarterly magazine.
Fortunately, we’ve found a solution to that problem. No, we aren’t expanding the magazine. Instead, we redesigned our Web site to become a destination for news and information about HBS alumni. While the Bulletin remains the site’s anchor, you will now find numerous links to articles about alumni in the news both on the homepage and on the new “Alumni News” page. Click on the links and you will go to the original source. We’ll also keep tabs on alumni blogs, of which there are dozens, and periodically provide links to those with broad appeal.
A twin goal of our Web redesign was to enhance our coverage of HBS faculty in the news. The School’s 218 faculty members are at the forefront of diverse fields and are sought after by the news media for comments on wide-ranging business issues. Visit our new “Faculty News” page to find links to articles featuring HBS faculty as well as to opinion articles written by them. Given the number of articles that quote our faculty, you’d think that the business press had HBS on speed dial.
Upon hearing of our plan to transform the Bulletin’s Web site into a hub for alumni and faculty news, a skeptical friend asked, “Why go to all that trouble?” The answer is simple. The Bulletin and its Web site share the same mission — to help keep HBS alumni in touch with the School and each other. But just posting a quarterly magazine in a 24/7 medium fails to take advantage of the Web’s inherent strengths. The new site aims higher.
We hope you will find the new Web site to your liking and even bookmark it for frequent visits. You won’t find a better place on the Web to keep up with HBS alumni and faculty in the news. Let us know what you think at bulletin@hbs.edu.
