El-Hage Takes Alumni Post
Seven years ago, Nabil El-Hage took a one-semester sabbatical from his high-pressure day job to teach two finance courses at HBS. He enjoyed the experience so much that he quit to teach full time. “Once I was back in the classroom, it was like falling in love with the experience all over again,” explains El-Hage, who had taught the first-year finance course in 1984–85 after earning his MBA with high honors as a Baker Scholar in 1984.
Over the ensuing eighteen years, he gained experience in private equity and venture capital, and for nearly a decade he served as chairman and CEO of Jeepers!, a national chain of indoor amusement parks.
While finance remains his area of expertise, El-Hage recently took on a new assignment as senior associate dean for External Relations, a position that will make him a familiar face to alumni. As senior associate dean, El-Hage will represent the School at alumni gatherings, and he’ll assist the development staff with fundraising. Among the things he aims to accomplish is “to make a dent in the notion that HBS is so wealthy that it doesn’t need the support of our alumni.
“Part of the reason we are such a great institution today is the generous support of alumni,” he continues. “It is precisely because of their support that we have been able to accomplish so much. We don’t expect, and we never have expected, that we will get the lion’s share of our graduates’ philanthropic giving. We just want HBS to be up there among those worthy of their consideration.”
El-Hage’s appointment came shortly before his 25th class reunion, which took place the first weekend of October. To mark the occasion, he and his wife and HBS sectionmate, Lucy, hosted a section party at their home. He also made the rounds of reunion gatherings, taught two finance classes, and held office hours for students. Yet in the middle of such a hectic schedule, El-Hage remained composed and affable — attributes that will serve him well as he juggles classroom and alumni assignments over the months ahead.
