From Money to Ministry
He may be retired, but the Reverend Rodney Quainton (MBA 1970) hasn’t stopped finding a way to connect his community to a higher spirituality.
For this HBS-trained banker-turned-Episcopal priest, helping parishioners weather rough times has been its own reward, particularly since he feels uniquely suited to counsel those facing difficulties in the private sector. He gives much of the credit to his time at Harvard.
“Business is an ethical profession. It’s also about relationships. How do you teach people, and do you listen?” says Quainton, whose banking career took him around the world handling international accounts, corporate lending, and managing assets for the First National Bank of Chicago.
Quainton found that he was good at listening to clients and helping people solve problems. It was a calling, not for higher income, but for a higher purpose. After 25 years in banking, he walked away, determined to provide spiritual leadership to his community. “Learning to listen has served me well in ministry,” he says, “as my job is not to fix someone but to journey with someone in their life’s joys and sorrows.”
He spent another 25 years leading congregations and helping others find their vocation in ministry. “That’s a major satisfaction for me,” he says. “They don’t have any private sector experience and can have trouble relating to the pressures their parishioners face. Sharing my experiences has been very meaningful.”
