Lending a Hand
Tom Tierney (MBA 1980) is chairman and cofounder of the Bridgespan Group and is a 2016 recipient of an HBS Alumni Achievement Award. In this video he talks about the essence of service.
“When I was launching Bridgespan and trying to figure out, ‘do I do this full-time, or part-time,’ and ‘it’s scary, do I leave?’, I had a conversation with a very wise person and asked him, ‘What really matters?’ The essence of that answer was: family, friends and network, and making a difference in the world.
“It turns out, if you give people time to reflect, most of us will say, at some level, that lending a hand is really important. So, lending a hand, the idea of being of service to others—which by the way may not accrue credit to yourself, nobody may ever know of the good deed that you did, or the help that you provided. Nobody may ever know. But wow! What’s better! I mean, what could be better?”
