Fall at HBS means many things to many people - for the incoming MBA Class of 1999 it means a certain level of discomfort as they take on a seemingly unmanageable case load and find themselves at the receiving end of their first cold-call. For the HBS Alumni Association Board of Directors it means the first of three visits to campus and the start of a very productive year of serving the School and their alumni constituents. This will be my first of two years as president of the Board, and I want to use these bimonthly columns in the Bulletin - as my predecessor, Cathy Connett (MBA '79), did - to report on the Board's activities and to encourage you to provide feedback.
Last year, under Cathy's energetic leadership, the Board divided into three committees, each one taking on a broad issue of importance to alumni: Continuing Education, Alumni Career Management, and Alumni Connectedness. In mid-July, the Board delivered its final report to the Dean and Professor Warren McFarlan. I will share their review of the report with you in a subsequent issue of the Bulletin.
In the meantime, the Board is fired up for its fall meeting and poised to tackle the issues identified for 1997-98. It will come as no surprise that some of the broader issues addressed last year have carried over; these may well be with us as we head into the 21st century!
Committee assignments have been made around three broad issues:
- Information Technology - how can HBS best harness this new medium to provide valuable services and opportunities for alumni to connect regularly with each other and with the School?
- Alumni Career Management and Development what resources can the School use to support HBS alumni throughout the many stages of their professional lives? As so many HBS alumni end up in entrepreneurial ventures, can the School provide services or resources tailored to their specific needs and issues?
- Global Alumni Issues - how are the needs of our international alumni different from those of our domestic constituents? Can the annual global alumni conferences help to connect alumni to each other and to the School, and how best should these conferences be organized and managed?
I will update you on the Board's progress in each issue of the Bulletin. While there are only 36 members of the Board to represent the concerns of more than 65,000 alumni, we are eager to hear from you. A list of Board members is available both here in the Bulletin and online (with e-mails highlighted for your convenience). Please feel free to contact us with your thoughts or recommendations. Our goal is to support you and the mission of the School, and we look forward to working with you. Best wishes for a pleasant fall.
