Spangler, Former UNC President, Candidate for Board of Overseers
C.D. ("Dick") Spangler, Jr. (MBA '56), is the only HBS alumnus among the eight candidates running in this year's election for the Harvard University Board of Overseers. Spangler, a prominent leader in both business and higher education, will be listed on the ballot mailed this month to all graduates of Harvard University. Five candidates will be elected, with the results to be announced in June.
Spangler has devoted much of his life to education, recently retiring after eleven years as president of the University of North Carolina (UNC), the nation's oldest public university. He became interested and involved in education issues as the father of two daughters enrolled in public schools. In 1972, he was elected to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Board of Education, serving a four-year term while that system was in the midst of court-ordered desegregation. In 1982, North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt named Spangler chairman of the state's Board of Education, where he served for four years.
Following graduation from HBS and two years of army service, Spangler, a Charlotte native, made his mark in his family's construction and real estate firm and in banking. During the 1980s, he led a merger of the Bank of North Carolina with the North Carolina National Bank Corporation—now NationsBank, one of the largest financial institutions in the United States.
A longtime friend of HBS, Spangler received the School's Alumni Achievement Award in 1988. He was a member of the HBS Board of Directors of the Associates from 1992 to 1997 and a cochair of his class's 30th and 40th Reunion gift campaigns.
