When he founded One Championship in 2011, Chatri Sityodtong (MBA 1999) had a simple goal: to bring mixed martial arts competition (MMA) to the place where it all began. “Asia’s been the home of martial arts for 5,000 years, but no one’s ever tried to commercialize it large-scale,” he told Forbes in a recent article. Five years later, with events in 11 countries, including Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and China, Sityodtong oversees a sports media company with 90 percent regional market share and triple-digit percentage annual growth. In a March 2015 HBS Alumni Bulletin profile, Sityodtong shared his personal struggles in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis and his passion for the sport that saved him.
