At its International Dinner last summer, the HBS Club of New York presented its Business Statesman Award to AT&T CEO Michael Armstrong and its Leadership Award to Katharine Graham, chair of the executive committee of the Washington Post Company.
In their acceptance speeches, both honorees described pivotal moments and challenges in their careers. Armstrong spoke of some technology turning points that have created conditions of both crisis and opportunity for business today. In a more personal vein, Graham recalled her initial trepidation about taking over the Washington Post - without prior executive or leadership experience - after her husband's sudden death.
The dinner, chaired by Henry M. Paulson, Jr. (MBA '70), president and COO of Goldman Sachs, is an annual event designed to raise funds for the club's operations. In addition, the club sets aside a portion of the evening's proceeds for New York Cares, a local charity, and for HBS scholarships.
