HBSAAAA Convenes in San Francisco
The first conference for HBS African-American alumni to be held outside Boston drew well over a hundred participants to the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco over Columbus Day weekend. A committee led by Steven R. Wilkinson (MBA '82) presented an outstanding program of distinguished speakers and a panel of prominent African-American CEOs and executives. The conference included a session on navigating corporate environments, moderated by Associate Professor David A. Thomas, and a workshop led by Professor Linda A. Hill on techniques for building and utilizing individual and organizational power and influence.
"The issues discussed had wide relevance," observes program chair Willa E. Seldon (MBA '86). Adds Wilkinson, "The dialogue took advantage of shared experiences from the vantage points of early- through late-career stages." He notes that the entire event was designed to maximize opportunities for both education and networking. "We wanted the experience to be informative and empowering," he says. "As HBS graduates, we can act individually and collectively as a resource for our community and have a tremendous economic impact."
African-American Alumni Association president Kenneth A. Powell (MBA '74) is delighted with the event's success on many levels. "As we break new ground as an organization," he notes, "we appreciate the tremendous support we've received from individuals and corporate sponsors such as The Gap, Kraft Foods, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Andersen Consulting, and Shell, among others."
Conference participants had the opportunity to cap off the weekend with a round of golf and a tour of Bay Area wineries.
