Samuel Hayes and Hugo Uyterhoeven, two longtime HBS faculty members, retired in June. Summaries of their distinguished careers follow.
Samuel L. Hayes, III, the Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking, joined the HBS faculty in 1972. An expert on capital markets and on the corporate interface with the securities markets, he is the coauthor or editor of seven books, including Wall Street and Regulation; Managing Financial Institutions; and Islamic Law and Finance. He has written numerous working papers and articles in journals such as the Harvard Business Review and The Economic Review and has contributed chapters to several books. Two articles he coauthored on real-estate finance won the Shattuck Award for the best article on real estate in 1967 and 1972.
Hayes's MBA teaching assignments have included the electives Investment Banking, Management of Financial Service Organizations, and Corporate Financial Management and the required Finance course (for which he served as course head). He has also taught in the Advanced Management Program, the Owner/President Management Program, and the Corporate Financial Management Program for senior finance executives, which he chaired for six years. In addition, he chaired Harvard's International Senior Managers Program in Vevey, Switzerland. Over the years, Hayes has consulted for a number of corporations, financial institutions, and government agencies, including the Justice Department, the Treasury De- partment, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. For twelve years, he was chairman of the Finance Advisory Board of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He now serves on the boards of Swarthmore College, the New England Conservatory of Music, Eaton Vance mutual funds, and Tiffany & Company. He received a BA in political science at Swarthmore College and an MBA (with distinction) and a DBA from HBS.
Hugo E.R. Uyterhoeven, the Timken Professor of Business Administration, has maintained a steadfast commitment to course development and classroom pedagogy since joining the HBS faculty in 1960. He has taught many courses in the MBA Program, including Management of International Business; Business, Government, and the International Economy; and Industry and Competitive Analysis. He also taught and served as course head of Business Policy and the General Manager's Perspective. In Executive Education, he has taught in the Advanced Management Program (AMP) and the International Senior Managers Program and currently teaches in The General Manager Program.
Uyterhoeven has made remarkable contributions to the School on many fronts. During the 1970s, he twice served as chairman of AMP while also chairing the School's General Management area. As senior associate dean from 1980 to 1989, he completely restructured the School's External Relations activities, creating a new focus on development and revamping the class reunion format. He also established a corporate relations effort at the School. Subsequently, Uyterhoeven took charge of HBS's Executive Education activities and also spearheaded the renovation of campus facilities, including Baker and Morgan Halls. He was a major proponent of the full-year academic calendar, which led to the recent establishment of the January MBA cohort.
Uyterhoeven, who received Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of Zurich in Switzerland and the University of Ghent in Belgium before earning his MBA and DBA from Harvard, is the author of numerous cases, casebooks, and articles. His 1972 HBR article, "General Managers in the Middle,"ranks among the journal's top-fifty bestsellers. He has also served as a director of a dozen companies, including Brown Boveri and Ciba-Geigy. Currently, Uyterhoeven is a director of Bombardier, Ecolab, Harcourt General, and The Stanley Works.
