Murray Named Class of ’08 Fellow
As a student of mechanical engineering at the University of New Mexico, Sean Murray (HBS ’10) learned to manage complicated projects. During three years of working for the Stryker Corporation, a medical-device firm in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he honed his design engineering and project management skills. “I knew a key element that was missing for me was experience managing people,” says Murray, who hopes to someday run his own medical-device or health-care company.
Murray is the recipient of the MBA Class of 2008 Centennial Fellowship, a fund established by last year’s graduating class. Collecting donations from 85 percent of its members, the Class of 2008 now holds the all-time participation record for a graduating class gift. Like their predecessors, the recent graduates chose to support fellowships. “There was a deep feeling that we had gone through something incredible, and we wanted to share this transformational experience with others,” says Jennifer Lee, who cochaired the class gift effort with Tricia Glynn (both MBA ’08).
Murray was attracted to HBS because of the Healthcare Initiative, the case method, and the School’s network of faculty, students, and alumni. “The resources here are immense,” says Murray. “Last summer I was reading Professor Bill George’s book on leadership, and two months later I was having lunch with him!” Murray was equally enthusiastic about the winter break trip he took to China with the MBA Immersion Experience Program. “We met with a really fascinating, high-caliber group of people,” he says. “I never could have arranged a trip like that on my own.”
Murray, who played Division I baseball at UNM, is grateful for the fellowship support he has received. “I was expecting to graduate with huge loans. Now I’ll have more freedom to do something really great with my education.”
