More Work to Do
Raised by his grandparents and sister in Dallas’s South Oak Cliff neighborhood, Casey Gerald (MBA 2014) went on to play football for Yale before coming to HBS, where he cofounded MBAs Across America, a nonprofit that brings MBA skills to small business owners. In a free-ranging interview with Texas Monthly, Gerald talks about the role that college athletics and early mentors played in his life, including “the old women” who helped hone Gerald’s speaking ability, used to deliver one of the most-watched HBS commencement addresses of all time.
Gerald, who delivers the keynote address at SXSW Interactive March 11, also discusses the decision to shut down MBAs Across America: “People went from ruthlessly doubting us to blindly believing we were saviors,” he says. “And I think one of the big lessons of our generation has been that it’s a very dangerous thing to put all our faith in a savior who’s going to solve all our problems. So by shutting down a successful organization, I’m hoping to spark a conversation about the larger work that needs to happen.”
