Student "Treks" Lead to Jobs and Opportunities
Topics: Relationships-NetworksWith interest running high in areas such as entrepreneurship, technology, new media, and the Internet, HBS student career "treks" to venues like Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and London have become all the rage during the holiday break. This January proved no exception. Some 500 students -- nearly one-third of the HBS student body -- traveled to San Francisco and Silicon Valley as participants in the fifth annual WesTrek, an event organized by members of the High Tech and New Media Club in coordination with the School's Career Services Office. A group of these students then flew on to Los Angeles for the premier Hollywood Trek, where they joined a total of 45 HBSers interested in the entertainment industry and the Internet. Meanwhile, in London, more than 90 students from the School were experiencing a full agenda of company visits and panel presentations as part of the second annual Eurotrek.
Commenting on WesTrek in the Harbus, Walter Jones (HBS '00), the event's cochair, said that "the Trek allows students to enter a self-guided tour of the home of key high-tech sectors." Trek participants visit companies, gather information, and build contacts in the area. Meanwhile, companies benefit by meeting a talented group of potential employees. Students took part in one such networking event, a "Startup Career Fair," that focused on early-stage high-tech enterprises and included a series of top-level panel discussions with venture capitalists, company founders, and executive search consultants. The program featured a banquet and keynote address by Scott D. Cook (MBA '76), cofounder and chairman of Intuit, Inc.
At the London-based Eurotrek, a program featuring the topics "Entrepreneurship in Europe," "Achieving Scale across Europe," and "Opportunities for Media and Entertainment Players in the New Economy" highlighted the schedule. Eurotrek's student organizers view London as the financial center of Europe, as well as a growing base for many of Europe's Internet and high-tech companies. England, of course, isn't the only place for entrepreneurial opportunities -- the Eurotrek program also featured opportunities to make contact with major companies and entrepreneurs from a number of countries on the Continent.
HBS Dean Kim B. Clark is an enthusiastic supporter of the career trek concept. "The mission of HBS is to educate future business leaders, to instill in them the skills and values needed to nurture a company and enable it to grow and prosper," he notes. "The numerous treks and special conferences organized by our students complement that goal by giving them access to many of the people and companies that are changing the way the world does business."
