Final plans are in place for the 2000 HBS Global Alumni Conference, to be held in Berlin, June 1316. Conference cochairmen Christoph-Matthias Brand (MBA '94) and Heiner Thorborg (12th ISMP) report that early registration is strong for the event, which will coincide with Germany's celebration of ten years of reunification.
The conference theme, "Knowledge, Risk & Change: Business Without Walls," will give participants an opportunity to consider the future of business and financial institutions in an environment of tightly linked national economies. More than a dozen HBS faculty members will moderate discussions among prominent business leaders from around the world. The topics to be considered -- such as "The Future of the European Welfare State," "Entrepreneurship in Europe," "Corporate Governance: Converging toward a Global Standard?," and "Making Cross-Border Mergers Work" -- reflect pressing issues for the European Community today.
The conference will also feature several plenary sessions, including one on "The Evolving World Financial System," led by World Bank president James D. Wolfensohn (MBA '59). "Europe today is in the midst of a significant transformation," notes HBS professor Dwight B. Crane, who is serving as faculty organizer for the Berlin conference. "The program has been designed to stimulate discussion on a broad range of topics among individuals who have the power to forge new business and economic alliances. We are looking forward to a fascinating exchange of ideas about the evolution of the European Union."
Held at the Estrel Residence and Congress Hotel -- Germany's largest hotel -- the conference will also feature social events and tours, as well as an opportunity for small group meetings in Berlin and Frankfurt with notable corporate CEOs and chairmen. For last-minute registration information, please see page 48 or visit the conference's Web site at www.hbsberlin.com.
