Internet commerce isn't usually associated with chicken feed, but in one country at least, that may be changing. The Dow Jones International News recently highlighted the surge of new Web sites that are geared toward agriculture in Argentina. One of the new sites, Agropool, headed by Axel Grippo (MBA '99), aims to help farmers pool their orders so they can make bulk purchases at lower costs.
"Everyone thinks that farmers are unsophisticated and have no ideas," Grippo said in the January 5 article "Online Agricultural Sites Sprouting Up around Argentina." He estimated that 10 to 20 percent of Argentina's farmers now have access to the Internet and are using it on a regular basis.
Agropool is funded by Tempo 2, a Silicon Valley firm that has partnered with Argentine businesses to provide strategic and financial advice. Grippo said his firm expects to spend several million dollars this year expanding throughout Latin America. Agropool's revenues will come from fees charged to companies selling products on its Web site.
With the online community growing in Latin America, Grippo noted the importance of teamwork among new Internet players. "We are all in competition with one another in a sense, but we are also cooperating to help the industry as a whole," he said. "As each of us makes our own sites known, the idea as a whole will become more popular and more widely used. That will help us all."
