The recent growth of faculty associated with key academic initiatives in areas such as entrepreneurship, information technology, and global business has contributed to an acute shortage of office space at HBS. In response, the School has extended the reach of its campus to a building one block south of the Soldiers Field location near the intersection of North Harvard Street and Western Avenue. External Relations (ER), which includes many functions familiar to most HBS graduates, is one of several administrative operating units of the School that are now located in a newly renovated, five-story building at 230 Western Avenue (see map).
"We're excited about the move, which has allowed us to consolidate our operations and to help provide additional faculty office space on campus," notes ER executive director James C. Schroeder, who oversees the activities of Alumni Relations, Corporate Relations, Development, the HBS Fund, Planned Giving, Alumni Records, Data Operations, and the Bulletin. "This is also the first time in many years that all of External Relations has been together under one roof, which creates important new synergies within the department."
ER staff will still be on campus frequently, and official alumni events, such as reunions, board meetings, and reunion committee meetings, will continue to be held on the main campus. In addition, there will be space set aside on campus where External Relations staff can meet with alumni visitors. "For most alumni, the move should appear seamless," notes Schroeder. "Our phone numbers are the same, and our mailing address hasn't changed, since our mail still goes through the Soldiers Field post office. We're still easy to find, and parking is available both at the campus and at our new location for alumni who wish to visit."
In total, the move has provided new space for approximately 140 HBS staff from External Relations, the Publications Office, the Financial Office, Human Resources, and some portions of Information Technology, the Department of Operations, and Executive Education. The building previously housed HBS Publishing, which moved its operations to a more spacious venue in nearby Watertown last October.
