Class of 1975 Endows Chair in Entrepreneurship
With the study of entrepreneurial management flourishing at HBS, the challenge to find and support new faculty and to fund curriculum development is more pressing than ever. Recently these needs were recognized by the Class of 1975 through its generous 25th Reunion gift to the School: The Class of 1975 Professorship of Entrepreneurial Management. The inspiration for the gift came in part from the popularity of The Entrepreneurial Manager, the recently retooled required course, as well as from perennially oversubscribed electives such as Entrepreneurial Finance, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Starting New Ventures, and Venture Capital and Private Equity. The Class of 1975's major gift cochairs, Leo J. Corbett, Hamilton E.("Tony") James, and Kendrick R. Wilson, reported that their classmates have shown overwhelming enthusiasm for the gift's objectives: to recruit and train the best faculty from around the world; to support case writing, research, and curriculum development in entrepreneurship; and to enhance the overall classroom experience for faculty and students.
"Over the years," the cochairs wrote in a joint letter to the class, "our classmates Bill Sahlman, professor and cochair of the Entrepreneurial and Service Management Unit and Chris Darwall, executive director of the HBS California Research Center, have led the tremendous growth of entrepreneurial studies and activities at the School. We were delighted when we learned that this is also one of Dean Kim Clark's top priorities."
The task of organizing the chair's endowment was a first-time collaboration for Corbett, managing partner for Internet Partners at Zephyr Management, a private equity venture capital firm; James, chairman of Investment Banking at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette; and Wilson, managing director and partner at Goldman Sachs.
"It makes sense that our class wanted to fund a chair in entrepreneurship," Corbett told the Bulletin, "because so many of us are now going down that road ourselves."
