Clubs: Capital Improvements
When he began planning the event, HBS Club of Washington, DC, president Antonio Alves (PLDA 15, 2013) envisioned the club’s first annual Leadership Gala as a modest outing that would boost awareness of the club in the Greater DC area. By early 2015, however, it was clear that the June gala—its host committee stacked with former cabinet secretaries, ambassadors, and other Washington notables—would be a much larger affair, one with the goal of raising the profile of the DC business community, often overshadowed by the federal government.
Washington is changing, says Glenn Youngkin (MBA 1994), president and COO of global private equity firm The Carlyle Group. Youngkin, the recipient of the club’s first alumni achievement award, participated in a panel discussion on the changing face of business in DC with Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation, and Bill Marriott Jr., chairman of Marriott International. “Washington has transformed from a city dominated by government to one that has a thriving business community,” says Youngkin, “and it is attracting an enormous number of talented people.”
